Art, Sport, Combat – The Self-Defense Question

“Art, Sport, Combat – The Self-Defense Question;” A realistic perspective about different styles of training.

Let’s get straight to the point; The definition of “Martial Art” is simply rooted in the words themselves. “Martial” from the root Mars, god of war and “Art,” the conscious use of skill and creative imagination to produce an experience that communicates ideas.  “Martial Arts” are then definable as organized systems of physical training for sport and personal growth through creative expression.

Self-defense is about managing distance and finding the quickest and most efficient/effective way of neutralizing your attacker via combat. You don’t need to do a fancy throw and put the attacker in a rear naked choke or a triangle choke to do that. Primarily, self-defense distancing means not getting grabbed and getting away from an attacker. Well placed striking combinations or punch/kick combinations to effective targets that neutralize an attacker are prime examples of the best combat methods for a self-defense situation.

In some cases, a reflex response that results in knocking an attacker to the ground are quick decision options. However, avoiding the ground is key, along with overwhelming strikes, and ultimately getting up and getting away. In addition, an attacker may have friends nearby that can potentially result in multiple attackers ganging up on you, especially if you end up on the ground.

In real combat situations, there are no regulations nor rules that prevent your attacker from being armed or taking cheap shots at you. There are also no rules that prohibit you from hitting vital areas like the throat, eyes, groin, and other key pressure/motor point and soft tissue areas of your opponent’s body.

When going to the ground, getting back up is the goal in any self-defense situation, there is no mercy by “tapping out,” and there is no such thing as a “fair fight” unless it is a sport-style competition.

Makowski’s Martial Arts and Fitness curriculum advances skills through traditional martial arts and sport-style methods. Fundamental techniques of the art are taught properly to develop correct and effective skills and abilities in a safe, controlled environment, taught by highly skilled certified instructors.

Real self-defense training is added to these well-trained basic skills. It is one of the primary reasons that Makowski’s Martial Arts has been voted the “Best Martial Arts School” for seven consecutive years. This entry provides the distinct reasons that we share the motto:

“Chance favors those who are prepared!”
