    What is Krav Maga and Who Can Learn It?

    Some Background Information About Krav Maga

    Loosely translated from the Hebrew Language, “Krav Maga” means “close quarter fighting”. It delivers a very strong and applicable system of self-defense, reliable techniques, and the simple, direct movements to neutralize an opponent quickly, and brutally if necessary. The techniques are solidly grounded and easily applied for urban combat against one or more assailants, gun, knife, hand-to-hand, and intermediate weapons.

    Krav Maga is a fighting style that was developed from the defensive, street fighting techniques of Jewish gangs in Europe. It was adapted and developed by Imi Lichtenfeld who trained several elite units of the Haganah and Palmach (strike force and forerunner of the Israeli Defense Force [IDF]), and police officers. Krav Maga was adapted and further developed by Lichtenfeld for Israeli security forces when the nation was founded. Lichtenfeld continued to develop Krav Maga after his retirement from the IDF.

    It became the most effective self-defense source of training for special forces engaging both armed and unarmed attacks. Krav Maga is considered the most practical self-defense system in the world. Today, it is used by military, special forces, security services, law enforcement, and intelligence organizations.
